Five tips to help you write your best songs
These tips from the Chorus Team’s published songwriters will help you make sure your songs are always the best they can be.
1. Centre your song on one theme
The lyric to most songs can be summarised in one simple short sentence. If your song can't, there’s every chance it’s too complicated to make any impact with its audience.
2. Write from experience
Where possible, a lived in experience is more likely to come across as authentic. If there’s a connection between the songwriter and the lyric, there’s a better chance there will be a connection between the song and the listener.
3. Collaborate
Find someone who you like working with and bounce ideas off of them. Professional songwriters constantly collaborate. The songs that you know and love from the radio are predominantly multi co-writes.
4. Make sure you have structure
Most songs are between 3 and 5 minutes in length, and have a selection of the following:
- Intro
- Verse
- Pre Chorus
- Chorus
- Bridge
If your song is 7 minutes long and has two sections, can it keep an audience entertained?
5. Find inspiration
You won't feel inspired all the time, but you can get over that.
Use Chorus to help you construct a palette of words, lines and chords for your song – ‘new’ is often inspiring.
Stay in the moment, and write as much as you can when the magic is flowing.
